We are investigating a volunteer transportation for any older or disabled Georgetown resident. Our first step is to determine if there are Georgetowners who will make use of this type of system. If we determine there will be a consistent ridership, we will recruit volunteer drivers.
People Plus, of Brunswick, operates the Volunteer Transportation Network (VTN). While Georgetown is not in People Plus’s usual coverage area, they have agreed to include us for an annual fee. They will provide all the ride management services and training for the Georgetown volunteer drivers. They also provide an umbrella insurance policy.
When the system is operating, riders would call People Plus and register their ride request. This could be a one time event, like a doctor appointment or an on-going situation. The volunteer drivers access the People Plus software through their website and review the ride requests for this area. If they are able to support a ride request, they indicate that on the website and that ride is taken off the open request list. A small contribution would be requested but not required.
We are currently reaching out to our community groups, like the Community Center and Working League to get the word out. We will also be arranging neighborhood meetings to reach as many residents as possible. Please contact us if you have interest either as a rider or volunteer driver. firstname.lastname@example.org
