Home Sharing in Georgetown
Age-Friendly Georgetown (AFG) has enrolled in a pilot project by Maine Housing Authority to investigate the viability of a home sharing program. This approach is taking place in cities and towns throughout the state. The concept identifies folks with extra space in their house that they would be willing to rent. This provides an opportunity for those needing housing. The renters would receive a lower than market rent, which is set by the homeowner. Professionals would screen the potential renters with background checks, references, and more. The hosts and the renters are interviewed to see if the match is appropriate. Often the renters do chores around the house for a rent reduction. This program provides the homeowner with income and possible help with chores that have become too difficult to accomplish. Renters get a chance to find housing they can afford.
The program is administered by a company called Nesterly, under a contract with Maine Housing. This company handles the financial transactions, monitor the matches, and provide liability coverage.
AFG is sharing information about the program and is working to see if this can be a source of additional housing in our town. The first step will be to see if there are any homeowners interested in learning more to see if they might become a host. Following that, we will seek renters to apply. If you or anyone you know is interested in learning more, please get in touch.
